Via Christi Hope
For this week's showcase, we are back at Via Christi Hope, where they are helping people stay in their homes for as long as possible.
Recently, we were able to speak with Wayne and Rachel and their daughter, Ann. They let us know just what Hope has meant to them.
"I was in a wheelchair when I came," said Rachel, participant. "I couldn't climb up any steps. Now I can go up the front steps of the bus. I was having to go up the lift before. Now I can go up the front steps and I can walk with the walker and I can even use a cane at home."
"I'd just come out of the hospital -- not too long, maybe about a month before -- and I was almost completely bedfast and now I'm walking with a cane and it's all up to them. They have just done miracles -- worked miracles with me, really."
"I like the way they come pick us up," said Wayne. "They've got good drivers -- every one of them. They've got good doctors. The whole staff is wonderful. You can't beat 'em anywhere. They are so friendly. If you need anything they'll help you right quickly."
"Not having to run around to different doctors and running around to get your meds and everything -- and having the transportation," said Rachel. "It's just like having somebody take care of you. It's really great. I'd recommend it to anybody."
Not only does Hope provide services for participants, as you've heard from Wayne and Rachel, but it can impact the lives of their friends and family as well.
Ann, Wayne and Rachel's daughter, gives us insight into what Hope looks like from a caregiver's perspective.
"You don't have to do it by yourself," said Ann. "You don't have to feel like you're all alone -- you always have questions and things are always coming up and you're feeling inadequate as to how to handle things like that. Well, here you have someone to talk to and confer with and ask -- a lot of skilled personnel."
"Their transportation is here and available. There are times when I do go with them but it's necessary for me to have to take off work and have to take them all of the time. So it's just wonderful."
"Having everything under one roof, in one convenient location and having a team to work with is -- I couldn't have asked for anything better."
So there you have it -- a little more personal look into Via Christi Hope. You heard them touch on transportation, healthcare services, medication and therapy. Via Christi Hope also offers home care and socialization at the Adult Daycare Center.
Via Christi Hope serves those 55 and older living in Sedgwick County. Payment for the program is paid for through Medicaid, Medicare and private funding.
