Dream House groundbreaking

WICHITA, Kansas -- At least half a million dollars is expected to be raised to help fight breast cancer. That's the goal behind the KSN Dream House for the Cure. On Tuesday, we celebrated a major milestone.

Despite a damp, cold and almost frozen first shovel full of dirt, timing for KSN's Dream House for the Cure groundbreaking may have been perfect -- the next nice day at The Oaks in Derby and real progress can be made.

"By first of next week we'll have excavators out here digging the foundation," said Cherie Nies-Cowgill. "Seven months from now the house will be done and 100% of the profits will be given to the Mid-Kansas Susan G. Komen for the Cure affiliate."

Already, they report major progress in their mission to fight breast cancer -- without a single wall in place.

'"We're having lots more phone calls, more interaction with the community, just people talking," said Teresa Carter, president, Mid-Kansas Komen chapter. "I went to Topeka the other day and was talking to a legislator about another issue. She didn't want to talk about that. She wanted to talk about the Dream House. I was like, 'wow'!"

The conversation the project has already sparked is exactly what those on the fronts say we need.

"We need more people talking about it," said Marcela Cousens, Early Detection Works outreach worker. "We need more money for a cure. We need more money for screening -- a lot more money for screening, definitely -- and this a great way to do it."

But it's only possible because developers, builders, suppliers and contractors said 'yes!' -- not just to building a house but to being part of the cure.

"It's a wonderful project for Wichita and I think everyone is proud of that," said Chris Goebel, Star Lumber and Supply.
