WICHITA, Kansas --
At the Oaks in Derby, the KSN Dream House for the Cure is coming together. On Wednesday, concrete crews scrambled to pour the basement before the cold weather moved in.
The sun was shining Wednesday when Rick Heise of LaFarge North America was on site during the concrete pouring.
"They got the footings poured yesterday. The basement walls will go up today. Tomorrow we'll put the concrete in the forms," said Heise. "This is the Clifford Nies foundation crew setting the forms right now."
"If the weather's marginal we can still pour the concrete. We heat our concrete. We're used to pouring twelve months out of the year. Cold weather is a factor but we'll be ready to pour."
So how long does the concrete sit before moving to the next step?
"If the weather is decent, they'll probably strip the forms the following day and then the concrete will cure for several days then they'll start their waterproofing and backfill."
So why is LaFarge involved in the Dream House for the Cure project?
"It's just a wonderful project. We want to be active in the community. We have a long, long relationship with Nies Construction -- wonderful family. It's just the right thing to do. Cancer touches everybody."
