THE KSN DREAM HOUSE FOR THE CURE
Getting a mammogram

WICHITA, Kansas --
Cypress Women’s Imaging specializes in breasts. Mammograms are what they do all day long. The clinic is a perfect place to ask if a mammogram is going to hurt.
"Some of them do, but not anymore," said Lois Heroman. "I had one that hurt so badly I cried when she was doing it. After that one I told my doctor I was never going to have another one and he said, ‘yes you are,’ so next time I told them, ‘oh that's not necessary,’ and I've never had one that has hurt since."
With digital mammograms, any discomfort will be short. They’re looking for just four pictures: two different views of each breast.
Yes, that’s me breaking a sweat. Not because it hurt, but because it was simply awkward having my breast under someone else’s control. It’s strange.
Minutes later, I’m done. And as I found out from visiting with other mammogram "candidates," the alternative may be even more uncomfortable.
My mother is 87 years old and never had a mammogram until about a month and a half ago," said Heroman. "She found a lump in her breast that turned out to be the size of an orange and she now has inoperable breast cancer."
Like most women, I got the all clear from my mammogram.
This was a screening mammogram. That means they are looking for any changes from year to year. If they find anything suspicious they will have you in for another test. That test is a diagnostic mammogram that will take more specific pictures of the area in question.
