DERBY, Kansas --
Gene Hickey from Gene's Custom Construction is working on framing a roof on the KSN Dream House for the Cure.
As we have gone through the process of building the Dream House, it's amazing how quickly things come together.
"The framing part of it goes fairly quick," said Hickey. "I've got a pretty good-sized crew so we can make things go pretty quick."
So how's the weather going for you?
"The weather is okay. The wind is going to be a bit of a problem this afternoon but we're used to it so it'll be alright."
On a personal basis, when you went to your crew and said 'alright guys, I'm going to ask you to do something out of the goodness of your hearts' what was there reaction?
"They were like me. When Nies Homes first came to me I immediately jumped on board. The building industry has been good to me the past twenty years so I thought, what better way to give back to the community than to get involved in a project like this."
It seems like everybody, at some point in their life, has been touched with cancer -- somebody in their family perhaps. Have you had an experience with it?
"Yes I have. My wife is a cancer survivor. Four years now she has been cancer free so I've been through this process and I know what it's all about."
What did your wife think when you told her you were going to be involved in this project? Was she pretty happy about it?
"Oh, absolutely. This is a fantastic project for a fantastic cause -- early detection. I know for a fact that's what saved my wife's life. That's why she's alive now so it's an absolute must and all of the money that goes to that -- it's a great cause."
