Look Good Feel Better for cancer patients

WICHITA, Kansas -- It is important to remember that as the KSN Dream House for the Cure goes up, new women all over Kansas are being diagnosed and treated for breast cancer. Tonight we meet a few of them who are dealing with chemo at a program recently held in Wichita that promised them they would look good and feel better.

For Dedra Miller it's almost déjà vu...

"This would be the left side," said Miller. "I already had the right side removed."

But fighting a second case of breast cancer brings with it experience -- this time she's quick to ask for help!

"A lot of my friends would say 'you look really tired and run down' and I just kind of wanted a way to pick me up."

So Dedra came to Wesley Medical Center's "Look Good Feel Better" session. The American Cancer Society hosts the event. Cancer patients take home bags full of brand new, name brand cosmetics and get help from professional cosmetologists who can address all sorts of skin, make-up and hair concerns.

"The first time I went with a wig but it was very hot and I was always pulling at it and I wasn't sure it was going to stay on."

While Dedra is sticking to ball caps and her bald head this time around she may rethink that decision after tonight. She found a cut and color that we think makes her look marvelous.

Oncology nurse Shirley Parish says that's a big part of the battle.

"It helps people emotionally, especially women, because cancer is an emotional disease along with physical and it really helps women feel better."

And while they might not look like themselves, they do look better. But is it the makeup, the hair or just the smile that makes such a difference.

The next Look Good Feel Better session at Wesley is set for June 9th. It is free to cancer patients undergoing chemo, or radiation. Because space is limited, they need you to RSVP. The number to get signed up or get more info is 316-265-3400.
