Army suicides to top 2008, but progress seen

Nov. 17: Army Vice Chief of Staff General Peter Chiarelli says, as of Monday, 140 active duty soldiers were believed to have died of self-inflicted wounds so far in 2009. That's the same as were confirmed for all of 2008. NBC's Steve Handelsman reports.  (NBC News Channel)Soldier suicides this year are almost sure to top last year's, but a recent decline in the pace of such deaths could mean the Army is making progress in stemming them, officials say.

Elkhart County Coroner John White holds a folder for Debra K. Gibbs who committed suicide on June 23. White expects the suicide total for 2009 to be higher than normal and attributes the increase to the tough economic times. Coroner John White is presiding over a sad tally in this northern Indiana county, tracking rising numbers of suicides he believes are linked to the lingering recession. Elkhart may be a harbinger of deadly increases in other hard-hit areas.
